Etosha National Park Wildlife

As we continued our self-drive through Namibia, our adventure led us to the incredible Etosha National Park.  This is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.  As Namibia’s premier wildlife sanctuary, Etosha is renowned for its massive salt pan that spans a remarkable quarter of the entire park.  This enormous salt pan contrasts dramatically against the surrounding grasslands and diverse habitats found within the park.

One of the main highlights of Etosha National Park is its exceptional game viewing opportunities.  The abundance of wildlife, including elephants, lions, rhinos, giraffes, and birds, offers an unforgettable safari experience.  The park’s easily accessible roads allow visitors to self-drive and explore its vast expanse at their own pace.  But drivers are not allowed to exit their cars and must refrain from driving off-road.

Etosha National Park is renowned for its numerous waterholes, which serve as gathering spots for wildlife.  Waterholes offer a high probability of witnessing thrilling wildlife encounters up close.  Alongside the incredible wildlife experiences, a range of accommodations is available.  During our stay, we chose the remarkable “Onguma The Fort”, strategically positioned on the eastern side of the park near Etosha’s Lindequist Gate.  This luxurious lodging provided us with comfort and convenience, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the riveting beauty of Etosha while enjoying outstanding hospitality and exceptional amenities.

Nestled within the captivating landscapes of Etosha, “Onguma The Fort” is a true gem.  As part of the esteemed “Onguma Collection”, this luxurious lodge offers a blend of classical African elegance with Moroccan and Indian influences.  The accommodations are a testament to opulence, with the Sultan Suite in the main building and 12 private “Bush Suites” spread out to ensure utmost privacy.  The en-suite cabins boast spacious outside decks that provide the perfect setting for relaxing and viewing the breathtaking surroundings.  Every cabin has a splendid vista of the vast expanse of the Etosha Pan.

Watching the Waterhole

One benefit of the lodge is the waterhole, located directly across from the main building.  The water attracts animals day and night, including elephants, giraffes, zebras, impalas, wildebeest, and many more.  It was fascinating to have breakfast, lunch, and dinner while watching animals and birds come and go.  In addition, we had a great chance to observe wildlife passing by our cabins on its way to the waterhole.

“Onguma The Fort” not only offers luxurious accommodations but also provides an exciting window into nature.  It is a place where African elegance meets fierce wilderness, and where the finest cuisine and impeccable service merge with the raw beauty of Etosha National Park.  Our stay here was marked by thrilling sightings, indulgent relaxation, a top-notch staff, and a true sense of immersion in the untamed wonders of nature.

Game Drives and Magical Wildlife

A Fresh Kill

Upon our arrival at the lodge, our assigned guide was eagerly waiting for us.  We wasted no time and embarked on an exhilarating afternoon game drive and sundowner.  As we traversed the rugged terrain of the Onguma Reserve, our guide skillfully maneuvered the vehicle, navigating through the plains in search of wildlife.  (Our guide was excellent.)

Enjoying a Fresh Kill

Suddenly, our excitement soared as we stumbled upon an unbelievable scene – a pride of lions gathered around a fresh kill.  The sight was mesmerizing, with six adult lionesses and five juvenile lions feasting on a recently killed oryx.  Although we missed the hunt itself, the proximity at which we found ourselves was nothing short of astounding.  We could see the deep crimson stains of blood smearing their faces as they voraciously shared the meal.  Witnessing the interactions of a lion pride unfold before our eyes was a revering and fascinating experience, reminding us of the untamed wonder of the wild.

Etosha Game Drive

The following morning, our spirits were high as we embarked on a game drive adventure in Etosha National Park.  The park has a vast salt pan that creates a striking contrast against the semi-arid savannah grassland and thorn scrub.  There were a lot of animals roaming around.  We saw zebras, giraffes, and birds during our short ride between the lodge and the park’s entrance gate.  There are close to 114 species of mammals in Etosha; however, there are no buffalos, hippos, crocodiles or monkeys in the park.

When our guide received information about a pride of lions at a nearby waterhole, we rushed towards the scene and were greeted by the majestic presence of “The Sisters.”  These six adult lionesses, known for their teamwork in hunting and roaming the area, quenched their thirst while cautious zebras and wildebeests watched from a safe distance.  Throughout the morning, we were blessed with incredible sightings.  Jackals, black-faced impalas, giraffes, kudu, oryx, eland, and elephants graced our journey, while ostriches, hornbills, and a magnificent Pale Chanting Goshawk adorned the skies above.

However, the pinnacle of excitement arrived when we encountered an adult female cheetah accompanied by two younger males.  With bated breath, we observed as she stealthily followed a herd of impalas, hoping for an opportunity to catch her breakfast.  Alas, the impalas, keenly aware of her presence, swiftly evaded, marking a thrilling display of survival instincts in the wild.

Wildlife in the Onguma Nature Reserve

Staying at “Onguma The Fort” in the Onguma Nature Reserve offered us an additional advantage to experience nature.  Spanning across 34,000 hectares of untamed Namibian wilderness, the Reserve serves as a haven for an abundance of plains game, over 300 bird species, and four members of the illustrious “Big 5” – lion, leopard, rhino, and elephant.  This meant that we had the opportunity to explore Etosha National Park and the wonders of the Onguma Nature Reserve.

The Reserve never failed to surprise us, offering moments that will forever be etched in our memories.  The sight of two magnificent male cheetahs gracefully traversing the Reserve, showcased nature’s elegance in its purest form.  On another occasion, we were fortunate enough to encounter a pair of playful lion cubs.  The birds of the Reserve also captivated us, from the regal Korey Bustard to the enchanting Sandgrouse and the charismatic Hornbills.  We were amused at one point by a male Yellow-Billed Hornbill. He mesmerized us with his elaborate song and dance routine, an intricate display of courtship in pursuit of a mate.

Onguma Sundowners

We loved taking part of the enchanting Onguma sundowner nature drives in the late afternoons.  These experiences exposed us to the captivating nature around us. They allowed us to savor the breathtaking beauty of the Namibian sunsets.  As we embarked on these scenic drives, we were treated to sightings of exciting wildlife against the backdrop of the golden hour, creating an atmosphere of tranquility and awe.

Sundowner Time

One particular sundowner drive left an indelible mark on us.  As we ventured deep into the Reserve, we stumbled upon a magnificent male elephant engaging in unusual behavior.  He skillfully used his strength and tusks to ram a palm tree, causing the coveted palm nuts to fall to the ground, providing him with an evening meal.  The sight of this gentle giant delicately interacting with nature’s bounty reminded us of the intricacies and resourcefulness of wildlife in their natural habitats.

The sundowner drives provided us with moments of relaxation and reflection.  This was a great time to relax, talk about the adventures of the day, discuss plans for the following day and sip some gin and tonics.

Wildlife at the Onkolo Hide

One of the most riveting, unforgettable activities at the Onguma Nature Reserve was visiting the Onkolo Hide.  This water-level hideout provided us with a unique opportunity to watch nature while remaining concealed from the watchful eyes of the wildlife.  We entered the small, bunker-like building situated next to a waterhole, and sat by observation windows at ground level.  It was a perfect position to witness the remarkable interactions of the animal kingdom up close.

Equipped with our cameras, we settled onto stools by the windows. We eagerly awaited the wildlife spectacle that would unfold before our eyes.  The hide served as an ideal and unique vantage point. It granted us exclusive, uninterrupted views of animals and birds as they approached the waterhole to quench their thirst and go about their daily routines.  Each moment brought new surprises and photographic opportunities, capturing the essence of the wilderness with every click.

Among the many fascinating encounters, we witnessed a warthog relishing a refreshing mud bath, giraffes gracefully contorting their long necks to drink water, and herds of impalas, zebras, and oryx watchfully approaching the waterhole.  The hide also provided glimpses into the avian world. The vibrant colors of the Violet-Eared Waxbill, Blue Waxbill, and the striking patterns of the Blacksmith Lapwing captivated our attention.  Prudent mongooses also approached deliberately, making sure to avoid being caught by surprise.

Within the Onguma Nature Reserve, the Onkolo Hide was a gem that provided us with a close-up and exclusive look at Namibia’s incredible wildlife.  The Reserve’s dedication to offering distinctive, immersive experiences that promote a great appreciation for the natural environment was unparalleled.

Epako Safari Lodge and Wildlife Reserve

The magnificent Epako Safari Lodge is located on the borders of eastern Damaraland in the Erongo region.  This was our last stop during our self-drive through Namibia.  This sanctuary turned out to be the perfect spot because it was conveniently located midway between Etosha and Windhoek.  As we made our way back to Windhoek’s international airport, it offered the ideal chance for us to take a break from our drive.

A remarkable jewel, Epako Safari Lodge is surrounded by stunning nature and towering mountains in a mesmerizing environment.  The lodge and rooms are set on a hillside with a view of the Omaruru River.  This private wildlife reserve covers a sizable area of 11,000 hectares and is home to a rich subtropical woodland area.  Our guide met us as soon as we arrived and was ready to share with us the beauty of the reserve and its wide variety of species.

Exploring the Reserve

This was one last opportunity to experience on our trip a captivating world teeming with mammals and bird species.  The reserve’s beautiful geological formations served as a backdrop to our adventures.  From graceful antelopes to vibrant birdlife, the Epako Safari Lodge provided us with an opportunity to connect with nature.  We were treated to a stunning showcase of wildlife which included graceful giraffes, leaping impalas, elusive rhinos, and stealthy cheetahs.  Bird species ranged from large ostriches to tiny Social Weavers.  Our stay here added to the cherished memories we carried with us on our journey home.

In the late afternoon, we parked on a hilltop with a magnificent panoramic view.  We stared at the mesmerizing sun dipping behind the surrounding rugged mountains, painting the sky with vibrant hues.  It was a wonderful moment to soak in the beauty and tranquility of wilderness with our sundowner drinks and snacks in hand.

The Lodge

The Epako Safari Lodge & Spa offers a retreat for travelers seeking a blend of luxury and immersion in nature.  As a member of the Relais & Châteaux collection, this boutique property is a blend of elegance and charm.  It accommodates only up to 20 guests.  The lodge features spacious rooms with a modern African decor, creating an atmosphere of indulgence and comfort.  Every room also has outside loungers strategically placed for viewing the reserve’s wildlife.

A highlight during our stay was the mesmerizing waterhole, an oasis of life enticing animals both day and night.  The lodge’s outdoor restaurant deck provided a front-row seat to this captivating theater of nature during our meals.  It was exciting to watch the procession of rhinos, zebras, giraffes, and oryx approaching the waterhole for a refreshing sip.  Some of the animals even ventured into the water for a quick cool down.  The waterhole was illuminated at night, providing us with a magical experience during dinner time.  It was a perfect complement to the restaurant’s gastronomic fusion of Namibian and international cuisines.

Giraffe Encounter

The most exhilarating experience we had in Namibia, and during our stay at Epako, was our encounter with Oscar.  He is a magnificent male giraffe who has become a familiar, friendly presence in the reserve.  As we embarked on a game drive, we were thrilled when Oscar approached our open-sided vehicle. We could tell that he was eager to engage with us.  Our guide explained that Oscar had developed a curiosity for the people in the reserve from a young age (he was born at the reserve) and often sought out their company.  In his early days, he would even wander through the main building, taking advantage of his smaller size at the time.

Getting a Treat

Now a towering giant weighing approximately 3,000 pounds, Oscar’s affectionate nature remained unchanged.  His encounters with visitors were filled with anticipation as he eagerly awaited a treat, often tamarind pods that could be found scattered on the ground.  We were amazed by the gentle demeanor of this elegant, sweet-natured creature as he fed from our hands.  It was an extraordinary moment with one of our very favorite wild animals.  Our encounter with Oscar was a truly unique memory that will forever hold a special place in our hearts.

The Epako Cheetahs

Epako provided us with an extraordinary encounter demonstrating its strong commitment to wildlife conservation.  The lodge had taken guardianship of two adult cheetah brothers from a local cheetah conservation organization during the challenging times of the Covid epidemic.  These brothers had a heartbreaking past, having been abandoned as young cubs in the wild after their mother was tragically killed.  Rescued by the conservation organization, they were raised in their sanctuary. However, they couldn’t survive on their own due to their dependence on humans for food. Epako Safari Lodge stepped up to provide a haven for these cheetahs, dedicating 3,000 hectares of fenced enclosure exclusively for them.

Feeding the Cheetahs

As part of our game drive experience, our guide informed us that we would have a unique opportunity. We would enter the enclosure and participate in feeding the cheetahs.  As we approached the entrance, we could sense the anticipation from the brothers. They were already waiting nearby, aware that feeding time was approaching.  We drove into the enclosure, through a double gated security system, with the cheetahs closely following our vehicle.

Once parked, our guide reached into a cooler next to his seat and began throwing chunks of meat to the cheetahs from the driver’s seat.  The cheetahs made dramatic sounds and displayed their incredible agility, sometimes catching the meat in mid-air.  They would then retreat to their “personal space” to devour their meal before returning for more.  It was interesting to witness the intensity of their interactions and occasional sibling rivalry over a piece of meat. We were fascinated by the raw power and grace of these magnificent animals.

The cheetahs’ proximity to our vehicle was truly enthralling. It prompted us to put our cameras aside and fully immerse ourselves in the moment.  In addition to giving us a close-up look at these stunning cheetahs, this extraordinary experience helped us better grasp the critical role that conservation organizations play in maintaining and protecting endangered species.

Enchanting Wildlife Haven

A visit to the Etosha and Erongo regions in Namibia surpassed our expectations.  We were mesmerized by the incredible wildlife and the impressive variety of landscapes.  They represent Namibia’s ultimate commitment to conservation and the preservation of its rich biodiversity.  As we bid farewell to this enchanting land, we carried with us cherished memories of all the thrilling encounters we had and the amazing scenery we encountered.  Namibia truly is a haven for those seeking a connection with nature and the awe-inspiring creatures that inhabit it.  Namibia is astounding and unforgettable.
